What is a NAM profile?

A NAM profile is a file that captures how one real amplifier responded to sound, trained by the open-source Neural Amp Modeler project. Playing guitar through it reproduces that amp at that setting. The files are small, free, and the same file works in any NAM player on any platform.

The short version

Someone puts a real amplifier in a room, sends known sound through it, records what comes out, and trains a small neural network to reproduce the difference. The result is a file. Load that file into a player, plug in a guitar, and you are playing through a model of that amp as it was set on that day.

The project behind it, Neural Amp Modeler, is open source. That is the reason the library is enormous and mostly free: nobody has to license anything to capture their amp and share the result.

How is this different from an impulse response?

An impulse response is a fixed snapshot of something linear — a speaker cabinet, a room, a microphone position. It sounds the same whether you play softly or dig in.

An amplifier does not behave that way. Push it harder and it compresses, and the harmonics change. That non-linearity is exactly what a capture is trained to reproduce, and it is why captures and impulse responses are usually used together: the capture for the amp, an impulse response for the cabinet.

How is it different from a modelled amp?

A modelled amp is somebody's engineering effort to recreate a circuit, usually with knobs that work the way the original's did. A capture is a photograph of one amp at one setting — no knobs, because the settings are baked in. What you lose in adjustability you gain in fidelity to that specific rig, and in the fact that anybody can make one.

Why are there so many?

Because capturing is free and takes an afternoon, and the results are easy to share. Sites like TONE3000 host thousands of them. In practice this is the real appeal: gear you would never own, in files that cost nothing.
